The Detroit Public Library (DPL) Commission approved the closure of four branch libraries during their meeting on Tuesday. The locations being closed are the Lincoln, Mark Twain, Monteith, and Richard libraries. They will all be closed on 12/22/11. [Read more…]
Aldermen vote unanimously in favor of cutting Chicago Library budget
This is how public library budgets are cut. To the sound of thunderous applause along with unanimous approval from people elected to represent us.
It’s official. The Chicago City Council voted in a 50-0 unanimous vote to approve Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s budget. This will result in around $8 million in cuts for the Chicago Public Library system. This is $3.3 million less than the original $11 million that Emanuel proposed in his original budget. [Read more…]

Amazon.com begins shipping the Kindle Fire tablet
And so it begins. This will be remembered as the moment in time where ebooks took off. The Kindle Fire tablet is officially here. Amazon began shipping them today. They were not supposed to start shipping until tomorrow, but Amazon gave their customers an early Christmas present this year and started shipping a day early. [Read more…]
Today is National Gaming Day at libraries
Over 1200 libraries in the United States will be participating in National Gaming Day (NGD) today. The event is an initiative put on by the American Library Association (ALA) with the goal of connecting communities with their library through games.
